Who We Are
Mongolia V.E.T. Net is a national NGO that has come from the work of Christian Veterinary Mission in Mongolia. In the early 1990’s Mongolia was reeling from the failed Soviet system and the departure of the Russians from their country. In 1994 six veterinarians went to Mongolia through CVM to access the needs for assistance and the possibility of outreach to the rural people. The opportunities to help with the nation’s developing livestock production system and the need for the “Light of Christ” were obvious. In 1995 Gerald and Frances Mitchum moved to Mongolia to begin the CVM work.
The Mitchums began a hospitality ministry to students at the Mongolian Veterinary School. There were no Christians at the school at that time but students began to come to know Christ and a small team of believers resulted. Students from other universities also came to the Sunday dinner/Bible study in the Mitchums' apartment. As these students graduated from university, there were few good jobs available. This small handful of believers banded together into an organization called Vet Net. Later this would be changed to V.E.T. Net, a network of veterinarians and educators training professionals throughout Mongolia, to gain the opportunity to share the HOPE that is within us. The goal is to bring genuine change to the rural, urban, and university people of Mongolia through the love and message of Jesus Christ. V.E.T. Net is a multi-faceted ministry that is reaching into all nineteen rural states in a country the size of the United States, east of the Mississippi River.
Our Work
The ministries of the Small and Large Animal Clinic and Training Centers reach out in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar and beyond to clients, Continuing Education participants, and veterinary students. The V.E.T. Net Small Animal staff invites veterinarians from the three large cities and state capitals to spend a week at the clinic to learn more practical, modern small animal medicine. The training of veterinary students in this close setting also creates a special environment to share the Good News at the small and large animal clinics. V.E.T. Net also offers English classes to university students. Students are invited to stay in the evenings for dinner and a Bible study.
Our teacher outreach, called “Claim a County,” began in 1996 by helping the teachers and administrators in the small rural schools to improve the learning environment for the children with materials, books, training and often improving the conditions of the school. A small home-group or church develops in virtually every county where “Claim a County” is implemented. There are now seventy-one sustainable rural churches with a total of 108 churches and home groups and 128 other counties with believers. After the small churches develop, V.E.T. Net continues to return after the three year project with a program called “Watering with the Word” to disciple and encourage these remote believers. The great challenge is to disciple these rural believers so that they become multipliers and expand the ministry in their area.
We have been given another wonderful project in Mongolia, “The Gift of Love.” We give a few sheep to very poor people and most start their own little flock. They often go from extreme poverty to food security. This project also helps the herders who provide the sheep and the local veterinarian as he helps with animal health issues. Every dollar that we get, less the fees to get the funds to us, goes to buy the sheep. There are no administrative costs. To date we have given over 10,000 sheep/goats.
