Dr. Tim Evans

Dr. Tim Evans is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology and the Diagnostic Toxicology/Analytical Chemistry Section Head at the MU Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. He received his DVM from the University of California, Davis in 1982 and an MS in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in 1996 and a PhD in Veterinary Pathobiology in 2002, both from MU.

He is a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists (animal reproduction specialists) and the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology. Most of his current research involves mycotoxins and their effects on livestock performance, as well as various aspects of reproductive toxicology and pathology.

Dr. Evans is passionate about teaching, and he participates in several MU courses, where he lectures on topics related in one way or another to toxicology. Dr. Evans’ teaching has been recognized with several prestigious teaching awards, including the 2015 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from MU and the William T. Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching in 2013. Dr. Evans’ other professional passion is engagement, and, over the last 20+ years, Dr. Evans engagement activities have included numerous opportunities to work and talk with owners and livestock producers, including individuals belonging to the Dine’ and Lakota tribes, as well as veterinarians and animal health technicians throughout the United States.

In 2009, he was selected as the April Nerd of MIZZOU resulting in the creation of Dr. Evans’ alter ego, THE ANTIDOTE: The Enemy of ALL things toxic. This honor was followed in quick succession by Dr. Evans/THE ANTIDOTE, being selected in 2010 as the first and last MIZZOU Nerd of the Year. Dressing up as THE ANTIDOTE opened up a whole new world of engagement for Dr. Evans, using “balloon animal medicine” to connect with K-12 students across Missouri on STEM-related topics. While 2020 brought many new challenges to teaching and engagement, it also reawakened an interest in new ways in which telecommunications technology can be used connect with primary and secondary school-aged learners, pet and livestock owners, and veterinary professionals, regardless of their physical location. The MU Engages Program provides the intimidatingly enthusiastic Dr. Evans, as well as his superhero alter ego, with additional opportunities to explore how virtual learning technologies can be further harnessed for purposes of STEM-engagement with K-12 students, especially those from populations traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, as well for the development of novel distance-learning opportunities for other MU stakeholders, including veterinarians and their clients residing in rural areas where access to state-of-the-art continuing education is limited.
