Externship

Location:
Ponderosa Veterinary Hospital
Kalispell, Montana

Job Description: Ponderosa Veterinary Hospital is a privately owned, well established small animal practice in Kalispell, Montana near Glacier National Park. PVH takes pride in providing high-quality compassionate care to our patients. Our facility is fully equipped with Heksa lab equipment, fully digital x-ray system, ultrasound, therapeutic laser, CO2 surgical laser, digital dental x-ray system, and endoscopy. We also provide integrative and rehabilitation services including acupuncture, chiropractic, photobiomodulation (therapeutic laser), and physical therapy/rehabilitation. As a hospital, we are involved in several community outreach projects. The hospital is owned by Drs. Brandon and K.C. Gates, graduates of Colorado State University. Dr. K.C.'s special interests include dentistry, nutrition, internal medicine, geriatric medicine, behavior, and soft-tissue surgery. Brandon's special interests include preventive medicine, urgent and critical care, hospice/palliative care, neurology, lameness, and integrative medicine (acupuncture, chiropractic, photobiomodulation, and physical therapy/rehabilitation).

Extern responsibilities include assisting veterinarians in all of their daily duties to the degree that the extern feels comfortable. This will likely include outpatient appointments, surgery, dentistry, housecalls, performing diagnostics and treatments, restraint of animals, monitoring anesthesia, etc. Due to the lack of specialists within close proximity, students may be exposed to a wide variety of cases and procedures. We strive to tailor the externship experience to each student’s interests, goals, and level of training.

Students are expected to be punctual, adhere to PVH's core values, maintain respectful and professional relationships with clients and staff, and actively participate in cases.

Faith Integration:
We integrate our faith in the daily activities of the hospital through our interactions with our clients and staff by trying to model the "fruit of the Spirit": love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Our small staff includes both non-believers and Christians. We try to exemplify grace and forgiveness both in others and in ourselves. Opportunities to attend local church activities or Bible studies can be arranged.

Other notes:
While our team includes both Christians and non-believers, we strive to foster a culture rooted in grace, humility, compassion, and service.  Faith is an important part of who we are and helps guide how we care for patients, support clients, and interact as a team.  We enjoy teaching and mentoring students on a personal and professional level. Our goal is not only to help students grow clinically, but also to encourage thoughtful communication, critical thinking, and long-term career sustainability. We have three children (two teenage girls and a preteen boy). Housing potentially available depending on the time of year.
