Farm Animal Refresher for Missions

Are you a small animal veterinarian, student, technician or missionary who would like to go on a mission trip to a rural area, but feel a bit rusty in your large animal and ministry skills? Do you have a colleague, friend, or spouse who fits this description? He or she would be a perfect candidate for F.A.R.M.

Dr. Mary McDonald served in Bolivia, South America with Christian Veterinary Mission, teaching rural animal health care workshops. She is currently working on projects in Uganda and is offering trainings in farm animal skills.

Courses include safe handling, restraint, vaccinating, de-worming, hoof trimming, and basic animal husbandry for poultry, horses, goats, swine and cattle (the major species often encountered in rural areas on short-term mission trips).

The course also incorporates spiritual preparation for short-term missions, including cross-cultural training, how to share your faith, and how to write your testimony. Also covered is how to design and teach animal health care courses in developing countries. The trainings are 3 days in length and are held on Dr. McDonald’s farm in Catawba, Virginia (30 minutes from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia and 30 minutes from the closest airport in Roanoke, Virginia).

We welcome people with all levels of animal experience and mission work. Everyone will have something unique to contribute to the group and there will be opportunities for you to help with aspects of the training in which you might have a greater amount of experience than others.

Considering this, we welcome and encourage spouses to attend, regardless of their animal health care background. Expect a wonderful few days of learning, growing, and developing a special new group of friends!
