Ripe for the Harvest - Wintermantel

This project is intended to help South Sudanese church leaders to fulfill the Great Commission, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). To assist in this work, this project will help provide materials for discipleship training, study Bibles and other resources to pastors, church planters and believers who want to take the Gospel to those who haven’t heard. In addition, we will partner with local churches to provide demonstration projects for animal and crop agriculture, seeking to introduce improved farming and animal husbandry practices.

GO

There are limited Biblical or theological resources available to local church leaders in our region of South Sudan. This Special Project will help provide study Bibles and other Biblical and discipleship resources to men and women who seek to provide leadership in existing churches, and especially to those desiring to help plant new churches throughout the region. These funds will also help us to reproduce the discipleship training curriculum that was developed by Steve to train local church members in South Sudan to go and make disciples wherever God calls them.

GROW

Animals: Just as the people of South Sudan have suffered through decades of war, so have their cattle, goats, sheep, and chickens. These animals are often battling with parasites, preventable diseases, and poor nutrition. The “GROW” portion of this Special Project will introduce South Sudanese communities to husbandry practices that help them to take better care of their animals. Improved animal production will strengthen family diets and provide animals that can be sold for income.

Crops: Due to wars and instability, the farming practices of many farmers in South Sudan have remained unchanged for centuries.  Each spring they burn the fields and scorch the soil, depriving the soil of much needed compost/organic matter.  

With the funds provided by this Special Project we will train farmers in conservation agricultural practices. This will include inter-cropping, rotational cropping, and using legumes to add nitrogen to the soil.  When appropriate, new crops, especially vegetables, will be introduced.  Much of this will be done on our demonstration farm in Torit. We will train committed farmers to take this information back to their communities to make a long-lasting impact.
