Calvary Chapel Special Project
Soroti Calvary Chapel was planted as an outreach of the ministry of Calvary Chapel of Midigo in August of 2013. The goal was to create a place of worship in Soroti that would be based firmly on Biblical truths and a commitment to teaching God’s Word.
Uganda is a Christian country, but it is overwhelmingly characterized by nominal Christians or those who are not actually believers while still identifying as Christian. These are mainly people who are culturally Christian (because their families are or because their community is) and their experience is practicing a religious system of Christianity without any of the spiritual benefits of knowing Christ.
The most recent government census (2014) found that 40% of Ugandans self-identified as Catholics, followed by 32% Anglicans, 14% Muslim, and 11% calling themselves Pentecostal/Born Again/Evangelical. In an overwhelmingly “Christian” nation, we see very little actual impact from the good news of Jesus and the freedom found in a relationship with him. When people practice a religious system of Christianity without actually discovering Jesus as their Savior and Lord, then they miss out on the joy of being made into a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Instead, people take on the label of being a Christian, but they remain the same as they have always been; they have not experienced the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
