Rachel Henriquez, a veterinary student from the University of Florida was given the opportunity to serve on her first short-term trip with CVM in July to the Navajo.
Rachel was kind enough to answer some questions for us!
Q: Would you recommend going on this trip to a colleague?
Rachel: Yes, it was a great learning experience not only in veterinary medicine, but in culture.
Q: What was the most challenging aspect of your trip?
Rachel: Learning to be flexible with large animal calls.
Q: Please share an encouraging story of an experience from your trip of something that impacted you or that you learned.
Rachel: On my first day with the large animal mobile team, we got called out to a home that had many sheep and dogs. After our veterinary services were completed, the client invited us into his home for a lunch his family prepared. As we were eating, the family sang traditional hymns to us in Navajo from an old hymn book and we had great fellowship. The client, Steve, was eating at our table and shared his cultures’ strong sense of family and clan relationships. He then said something which opened my eyes, “I consider a fellow brother or sister in Christ more of my family, than I do a fellow Navajo brother or sister who does not serve the Lord.” Coming from a Latin culture where there is great pride in our nationality, I found what Steve said to be a beautiful reminder of who our eternal family is.
Q: How was your faith impacted as a result of your short-term missions service?
Rachel: I trust God to come through despite any roadblocks I may face this year. His plans are infinitely more fruitful than mine and I can trust him to guide my steps more each day.
Q: What next steps of faith is God calling you to as a result of this trip? How can CVM support, encourage, and equip you for these next steps?
Rachel: He is calling me to be a leader for the trip next year, and he is also calling me to proclaim his good works to those who do not know his name. Not just the works he did on this trip, but those he will continue to do in my personal life.
A special thank you to Rachel Henriquez for allowing us to share in a little piece of her journey to the Navajo! May the Lord continue to use this experience to touch the lives of others.
