Who We Are
Dr. John Coatney is a former Army veterinarian from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is currently finishing a Ph.D. in Veterinary Microbiology at Iowa State University, his wife, Kristen, is a hairstylist from Stillwater, Oklahoma
John participated in Christian Veterinary Fellowship (CVF) during vet school, and when he and Kristen were visiting friends in Haiti in 2011, John met a CVM field staff member who lived there. John told the fieldworker that he and Kristen were considering long term overseas work, and she encouraged them to contact CVM. Since then, they have been on short-term trips to Romania and Ethiopia, and are involved with their local CVF chapter.
John will be mentoring veterinary graduate students in Tropical Animal Diseases and Food Safety and Zoonoses, as well as building up the research program, focused on infectious/zoonotic diseases, at the veterinary school at Mekelle University in northern Ethiopia. He will also be working with faculty at a local seminary to grow their curricula in the areas of biblical languages, exegesis, and patristics. In addition to raising and home-schooling their four boys full-time, Kristen hopes to use her hairstyling skills to minister to local Westerners and potentially train Ethiopians in Western hairstyling.
The Coatney’s are partnered with Mekelle University’s College of Veterinary Sciences, where John has been asked to teach graduate students and consult/collaborate in research.
