Who is eligible for free voice mail?
People who need it. Community Voice Mail does not discriminate against any segment of the population. Demonstrated financial need and a goal for using the service are the only requirements.
Where can I get free voice mail numbers?
Probably in several locations in your community.
Our users generally share the experience of needing help from a social service agency. We have found it very effective to establish a “Host Agency” in a new community (this is called the CVM Site) – and then provide that single agency with "blocks” of CVM numbers to distribute to other "Participating Agencies” in that community.
Example:
The Host Agency in Seattle is Solid Ground. Solid ground provides “blocks” of Community Voice Mail numbers to Participating Agencies such as Downtown Emergency Services Center, Family Services of King County, YMCA/YWCA, and King County Work Training Program (just to name a few). These participating agencies then distribute individual CVM numbers to end users/clients (ie: people who need free voice mail).

How long can I keep my CVM phone number?
In general, for as long as you need it.
CVM phone numbers are generally distributed in 3 to 6 month increments. This usually allows people to meet their goals or make significant progress. Users typically need to check in with the agency that distributed their CVM number (either via phone message or in person) to extend the length of time their number is active. It is rare for anyone actively using CVM to be denied service.
How much does Community Voice Mail cost?
Nothing. Our service is free to those in need – and usually for as long as you need it.
In some cases, people who have reached their goals (for example, housing or finding a job) may elect to keep their CVM number for a while longer. Many CVM agencies will extend this courtesy at no charge. Some may charge a nominal fee – in most cases, this fee will not exceed $10 for 3 months.

In 2008, after using CVM for an average of 6 months, 70% of CVM users achieved at least one of their goals!
Do people abuse Community Voice Mail?
Almost never. Our experience has been that users who actively use the system experience success and reach their goals. They are thankful for this very necessary tool, and willing to recycle their CVM number to the next person that needs it.
